How to download Fonts to InDesign
InDesign is Adobe’s desktop publishing software. It allows users to easily create professional-looking documents that include text, images and graphics. Adding interesting typography to those documents is a great way to enhance the visual appeal, but in order to do that there are some steps that need to be taken to download fonts to InDesign.
Step 1: Find and Download a Font
The first step is to find a font you would like to use in your document. A quick search online for “free fonts” will bring up hundreds of websites with fonts available for download. Once you have found a font you like, click the download link to save the font file to your computer.
Step 2: Install the Font
Once the font is saved to your computer, it needs to be installed in order to be available to InDesign. Most fonts come as a ZIP file, which needs to be unzipped before installation. To unzip, right-click the file and select “Extract All”. Once unzipped, the original font file should appear alongside the ZIP file.
Step 3: Locate the Font in InDesign
Now that the font is installed, you need to locate it in InDesign. Open InDesign, and in the Character Styling Palette, click the Fonts Menu. You should see the installed font listed in the menu. Select it to use in your document.
Step 4: Apply the Font
The font can now be applied to text. Simply click on the text you would like to style, and choose the new font from the Fonts Menu. The text will be automatically updated with the font you chose.
Tips for Downloading Fonts
- Make sure you are downloading a ZIP file. Many fonts require downloading a ZIP file, which needs to be extracted before installing.
- Be aware of copyright. Unfortunately some websites offer fonts that are copyrighted, so make sure you are downloading fonts with a free license.
- Always unzip. Once a font is downloaded, unzip the file before installation.
